Warmer weather is a clear sign that summer is on its way, but it can also mean that thunderstorms are becoming a serious threat once again. Every thunderstorm has the potential to cause serious damages—even if it is not a severe thunderstorm, heavy rains and lightning strikes can be quite dangerous.
While thunderstorms may feel like a routine occurrence, it is wise to always take them seriously.
Whenever there is a thunderstorm, lightning is always present as well even if you can’t see it. Additionally, many thunderstorms contain high winds and hail, and a severe thunderstorm is declared when winds reach 58 miles per hour or more and hail is an inch or more in diameter. For thunderstorms of any severity, it is important to be sure you are heeding them with caution.
Why Thunderstorms Are Such a Dangerous Event
Damage and injury from lightning strikes. Lightning strikes are always a possibility, even with fairly minor thunderstorm incidents. Most lightning strikes between clouds, but it will often strike toward the ground as well—and this is responsible for over 300 bodily injuries each year. Lightning can also be dangerous due to property damages, as it can catch homes on fire and fell trees or power poles.
Property damage due to hail. Though every thunderstorm does not contain hail, it is always possible that it can form. Thunder clouds are quite cold inside, which can freeze precipitation, and hail can fall at alarmingly fast speeds which make it dangerous. Not only can hail lead to dents in unprotected cars, but it can also damage the roof and siding of a home, which will lead to water damage over time.
Harm from flash flooding. When a flash flood watch or warning is issued, it is vital to take it seriously as they can be so dangerous. Flash floods come about suddenly and can happen nearly anywhere, as heavy rains that overwhelm storm drains are a common culprit. Just a few inches of water can carry away a vehicle or knock a person off of his or her feet, so it is important to stay as far away from flood water as possible.
