Though dramatic instances are often what comes to mind regarding water damage to households, it can also be caused by commonplace events.
General heavy rain showers can cause issues, as a consistent drum of water can easily seep into microscopic areas of a home. We often respond to water damage calls that are a result of heavy rain—here’s what we typically see:
Backup of clogged gutters. Gutter clogs are a big culprit of water damage because debris allows water to pool up and seep into your home. At least every six months, a thorough gutter cleaning is recommended to prevent these types of backups.
Leaks around windows and doors. Small openings between windows and doors and the external walls of your home can allow water to seep in if they are not sealed. Installing weatherstripping is an easy and cost-effective solution for this.
Poor drainage around the foundation. When rain is too heavy for your drainage system to handle, it may begin to pool up around the base of your foundation and seep inward. Landscaping and extra drains can alleviate this issue and prevent damages from occurring.
Leaks in and around the roof. Roof leaks can often go unnoticed until they get severe enough to damage a home’s ceiling, but you can look out for signs of issues before it escalates to this point. Broken, missing or loose shingles are often a clear indicator that a leak is possible.
Malfunctioning of a sump pump system. A sump pump system is a great investment in protecting your basement or crawl space, but it is important to maintain them in order to avoid malfunctions that can lead to floods and damages.
Leaks around chimneys and skylights. As with windows and doors, chimneys, skylights and other features that intersect with the roof also introduce vulnerabilities. When you check the roof, pay close attention to the seals around these features for leak potential.
